Strategy #5: Translate Word Problems into Equations

Category: Algebra

Before solving, rewrite every condition in the problem as a mathematical equation or inequality.

Why it matters: SAT word problems are deliberately worded to be confusing. Translating each sentence into math removes the confusion and gives you a clear system to solve.

Key translations:

• "is" or "equals" → =

• "more than" → +

• "less than" → −

• "of" (with a percent or fraction) → ×

• "at least" → ≥

• "at most" → ≤

Practice tip: Underline each numerical relationship in the problem. Write a corresponding equation for each. Then solve the system.
