Strategy #10: Factor Quadratics Fluently

To factor x² + bx + c, find two numbers that multiply to c and add to b.

 

Why it matters: Factoring is one of the most tested skills on the SAT. Mastering it unlocks solutions to quadratic equations, simplification of expressions, and polynomial division.

 

Common patterns to memorize:

• Difference of squares: a² − b² = (a + b)(a − b)

• Perfect square trinomial: a² + 2ab + b² = (a + b)²

• Simple factoring: x² + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)

 

Practice tip: When you see a quadratic, immediately check if it's a difference of squares or perfect square trinomial before attempting regular factoring.
